FAQs

Understanding Vision Insurance

Vision insurance offers coverage for eye exams, eye care, eyewear, and other vision-related expenses.

It allows you to be proactive in caring for your eyesight and ensuring that you receive regular eye exams to maintain good vision.

Where can I get vision insurance?

You can get vision insurance in many ways, such as through the company you work for, association, school district, and even government programs like Medicare or Medicaid. You can also opt to purchase your own vision benefit plan.

What kinds of vision insurance plans are available?

Vision insurance comes in the form of either a vision benefits package or a discount vision plan.

A vision benefits package offers members eye care services in exchange for an annual premium or membership fee, a yearly deductible for each enrolled member, and a co-pay each time a member accesses a service.

A discount vision plan offers eye care at fixed discounted rates after an annual premium or membership fee and a deductible is paid.

What does vision insurance cover?

Vision insurance generally covers eye care services and products such as annual eye exams, eyeglass frames and lenses, contact lenses, and LASIK and PRK vision correction at discounted rates. You can get cheaper service by seeing a network provider as opposed to out-of-network providers.

What are my payment options?

If your employer offers group vision insurance, you may be able to pay for it through payroll deductions or flexible spending accounts (FSAs). An FSA allows you to use pre-tax dollars to purchase selected health benefits such as vision insurance, which can save you money.

If you purchase an individual vision insurance plan because your employer doesn't offer a group plan or because you're self-employed, you can expect to be billed monthly or annually.

Care Credit

The goal is to make it easier for patients to have the vision procedures they want without having to save up for years.
