Comprehensive Eye Exams in Duvall, WA

Comprehensive Eye Exam

Why Regular Eye Exams Are Important for All Ages

Getting regular eye exams is essential for maintaining good eye health, regardless of your age or physical condition.

During a comprehensive eye exam, an eye doctor will assess your visual acuity, prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary, and check for common eye diseases. They’ll also evaluate how well your eyes work together, and get a look at your overall health.

What to Expect During a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Several tests are conducted during a comprehensive eye exam. This involves a standard eye chart test. The eye doctor will also use equipment to examine the tissues inside your eyes.

The Importance of Dilation and iWellness

We recommend having a comprehensive eye exam that includes dilation. It widens the pupil which allows more light to enter, giving the doctor a better view of the inside of your eye.

Even though dilation can temporarily blur your vision, it can help detect serious eye diseases like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, amblyopia, and macular degeneration early, which can prevent permanent vision loss.

In addition to dilation, we offer iWellness scans to track changes in the back of your eye over time. However, it's important to note that these images shouldn’t replace dilation, as they only provide a snapshot of your eye's health.

Frequency of Eye Exams for Adults

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), adults with any type of vision problems should see an eye doctor annually.

Even if you don’t have vision problems, you still need an eye exam every two to three years until the age of 40, depending on your rate of visual change and overall health.

Adults with diabetes, high blood pressure, and other disorders may need more frequent examinations, as many diseases can impact vision and eye health.

For adults over 40, having an eye exam every one to two years is recommended to check for common age-related eye problems like presbyopia, cataracts, and macular degeneration. And for those over 60, an annual exam is crucial, as the risk of eye disease increases with age.

Children's Eye Care
Good vision is important for a child’s academic success. Children need to have their eyes checked regularly to ensure that they succeed in the classroom

Children should also have their eyes examined regularly, as approximately 5% to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. The AOA recommended eye exams at 6 months, 3 years, and before starting school, with follow-up exams at least every two years for children without vision problems or risk factors.

Children with existing vision problems or risk factors should have their eyes examined more frequently. Risk factors for vision problems include premature birth, developmental delays, turned or crossed eyes, family history of eye disease, history of eye injury, and other physical illness or disease. Children who wear eyeglasses or contact lenses should have their eyes examined at least every 12 months or as instructed by their eye doctor.
