For those who use contact lenses a number of precautions should be taken when using cosmetics. Here are a few professional pointers for ways to make sure your eyes stay beautiful and healthy.

Which Makeup Are the Safest for your Eyes?

To start, we strongly suggest you buy only cosmetics that are fragrance and oil free. In addition, to avoid flaking and smudging, which could result in bothering your lenses, use waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Lastly it's important to switch cosmetics used on your eyes frequently - ideally replace mascara monthly, liners every 3 months and eye shadows after half a year.

How to Safely Apply Makeup

Make sure you rinse your hands before putting in your contacts. Apply all eye makeup carefully to avoid scratching your lenses. Make sure you don't touch mascara or eye liner to the inner eye lid and apply mascara from the midpoint of the lashes instead of the base. Never let another use your makeup or put makeup on if the eyes are red or irritated.

In addition to removing eye makeup daily try to think ahead and avoid wearing contacts when you are aware you will be using chemicals such as those used for treating hair or in a beauty salon.

Following these guidelines when applying makeup during contact lens use can avoid red, swollen or inflamed eyes and damage to the contacts.

If your eyes become red or irritated don't put on any cosmetics around the eyes. Feel free to call your eye doctor if you have any redness, discomfort, or inflammation. Our Duvall, WA eye doctor can help you with any contact lens problems that are troubling you.
